The wind & percussion ensembles European powers imported to their colonies were about the only aspect of that colonial culture native populations found useful. The volume horns are capable of in the open air made them ideal for accompanying religious and civic festivals, and native peoples eagerly adapted them to their own uses. The ‘World Band’ workshops explore this relatively unknown phenomenon of a western culture being modified for indigenous tastes. Expect music of the bands of Brazil, Africa, the Andes, Mexico, India, the Balkans and more!
We will use arrangements of multiple single lines that all fit together in a whole as in a traditional ensemble. You’ll be playing parts on paper. Bring music stands, an instrument in good working order and your ‘reading cap’.
